Jane in Tribe

“You have to risk a little crazy in order to escape the gravitational pull of the ordinary.”

Situated in Morjim Beach you won’t notice Jane in Tribe until you walk into Khana & Love Cafe-Boutique. A must visit if you are in town to get your smoothie, coffee and breakfast fix (hard to find Westernized breakfast here, this is it)! While you wait for your order to be made you can browse through Jane’s collection and enjoy your small chat with Krish. So much love here, you will feel like you’ve come home. When we spent a month in Goa earlier this year, Jane was our go to spot for nourishing food, good WiFi and tips on all things Goa from restaurants to shops! We are so excited to share Jane’s story about how she fell in love, moved to India, built a business and what’s next for her.

Curito:

From New Zealand to Goa, how did you connect the dots?

Jane:

I first travelled to India in 2011 and was completely drawn to the culture, food, history, people and all the craziness in between, I first visited Goa in 2012 I loved the laid back small village vibe it offered in comparison to other parts of India I’ve traveled to which always made it the ideal place to set up business and a home base for us.

Curito:

How did you and Krish meet?

Jane:

I met my other half while  travelling of course! Krish is originally from Delhi via Rajasthan initially what seemed like a very cliche holiday romance & a couple years of quite the challenging long distance relationship fast forward 8 years on here we are in  Goa building up our dream business Khana & Love Cafe-Boutique + In house clothing brand - our little label of love Jane In Tribe which we started selling here at the night markets to begin with when we first moved to Goa, we literally work 24 hours 7 days a week together during the season but I couldn’t imagine doing all of this without him we seem to balance things out eventually on most days with our our common love and passion for the business, brand & customers we have both built and developed from the ground up.

Curito:

What was your life like before Jane in the Tribe?

Jane:

I studied fashion & design in Sydney Australia for  but worked mostly the 9-5 office grind which allowed me to slowly build my love of travel and and eventually starting my own clothing brand Jane In Tribe.

Curito:

What gives you inspiration to design your pieces and how did you manage to figure out the sourcing of fabrics and manufacturing of your business?

Jane:

I love designing classic cuts and silhouettes & mixing them with bold prints which seems to have become our trademark, I always loved shopping for  upcycled vintage pieces before I started my own brand and I feel a lot of our dresses do have a feminine vintage touch. We source all our own fabrics on the ground through our travels in Nepal where we source our bamboo & hemp fabrics from as well as Jaipur Rajasthan in the city centre and smaller villages outside in Bagru where we work with traditional artisans who custom print our designs and dye all our fabrics by hand.

Curito:

What are your tips for shoppers who come to Goa?

Jane:

Goa is filled with an array of creatives from India & all around the world & the best place to shop and see them all under one roof is at The Goa Collective Bazaar Market In Vagator every Friday night from end of November to April during the season if markets aren’t really your thing I recommend The Paper Boat Collective in Sangolda for quality sustainable clothing, or Rangeela In Assagao for gorgeous homewares & of course our very own Khana & Love Cafe-Boutique in Morjim Village for clothing & a curated selection of jewellery, accessories & organic blend coffee.

Curito:

Some of your favorite restaurants, shops and spots in Goa?

Jane:

One of my favourite local spots is Amancio for everyday eats they offer a broad menu from north Indian, Goan to vegetarian & seafood - very well priced and tucked in a little back street near the fish market in Siolim. Also if your looking for pure vegetarian Arambol offers a good selection of restaurants my favourite is The Morjim Cafe.

Curito:

What is your vision for Jane in the Tribe for this next decade?

Jane:

I’m not too sure about the next decade but I always love to see our cafe-shop grow and evolve with each season so one of our bigger goals is to buy land here in the village and move our shop away from the beachside bustle in a more secluded area with a bit more natural space.

Curito:

During your off season what are you guys doing?

Jane:

During the off season we  travel to Rajasthan, New Zealand & Australia visiting family which I always look forward to after a season and we do annual exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane to market our brand Jane In Tribe  as well as pop ups in the Gold Coast Australia.  We also start designing for the next season in Goa.

Curito:

We owe much of our artisan knowledge and love of Goan brands through Jane’s generosity of sharing when we were visiting. If you are in the neighborhood do visit Jane and Kirsh at Khana & Love Cafe-Boutique, you won’t regret it! Follow Jane on IG and you can shop her collection at Jane in Tribe, due to Covid19 right now shipments may take longer but when things resume again we look forward to seeing the new collection and getting our hands on a few pieces too!
