Learn about the significance of Chinese New Year spring couplets from Sujen Rocovits and how to create your own spring couplet using modern watercoloring techniques with Kristi Thornbury of Yili Arts! Each attendee will take home their own 8" spring couplet, enjoy Chinese tea and snacks during the workshop which will be held at the beautiful Tacha Teahouse in Taipei.

About Sujen:

Born and raised in Taiwan in the year of the Ox, Sujen Rocovits is a walking cultural history book of both Western and her native Eastern culture. Having dedicated most of her career to 4 decades to teaching Mandarin at Taipei American School many students and community members who have had the privilege to cross paths with Sujen know how magical it is to embrace the stories and knowledge she shares with others. Sujen’s experience spans beyond just teaching mandarin, she is also a former peace corp volunteer in Guatemala out in the Mayan Indian reservation, an artist, a storyteller and an avid seeker of adventure and travel enthusiast. As a retired educator at Taipei American School, Sujen continues to share her wealth of life and knowledge with others in publishing books, artwork and holding workshops.

About Kristi:

Kristi Thornbury began teaching Visual Arts at an Independent School in Canada, then moved to the Shanghai American School where she taught Visual Arts for 8 more years before coming to Taipei in 2014. Yili Arts was the realization of a dream to create an Art space where people of all skill levels come together for a positive creative experience; learning to paint in a social group atmosphere. Kristi’s teaching style is supportive without being rigid. She demonstrates and instructs every step so even beginners can participate easily, however, the focus is on discovering fulfillment in the creative process rather than making a copy of the sample painting.
